How to Clean Windows Before Tinting — and Why Most People Rush It

Thorough cleaning is the step that gets skipped. Installers wipe down the glass, think they're good, then go to lay the film and dirt comes out of the gaskets. You have to get in there, and you have to take that extra step every single time, even on a brand new car off the lot.

Start with ATR window tint adhesive remover, let it sit, then scrub with a white scrub pad (not green, white). Green has enough grit to scratch glass. Follow with a 1-inch razor blade scraper, spray it down again, one more pass with the scrub pad. Now you're ready.

What window tint cleaning supplies do I need before an install?

The core of it is an adhesive remover, a white scrub pad, and a razor blade scraper. We'd always recommend starting with ATR window tint adhesive remover — it's citrus-based, safe on all surfaces, and does a great job loosening anything that's sitting on the glass before you scrub. From there, your white scrub pad and scraper handle the rest. We also carry glass cleaner and tint slime, which doubles as both a slip solution and a cleaner once you're into the install.

How do I clean windows before tinting?

Start with ATR adhesive remover — spray it on, let it sit, and work it into the glass with a white scrub pad. Follow that with a 1-inch razor blade scraper to make sure you're getting everything off the surface, then spray it down again and do a final pass with the scrub pad. The key is getting into the gaskets. That's where dirt hides, and that's what comes back to haunt you mid-install if you don't get it out first.

What is a window tint adhesive remover and when do I need it?

It's a citrus-based cleaner designed to break down adhesive residue on glass — old tint, stickers, anything that's left a sticky behind. It's the right first step on any install, not just jobs with obvious residue. Even on a clean-looking window, starting with an adhesive remover gives you a better surface to work from. ATR is what we carry and what we recommend. It's interior-safe, won't discolor vinyl or plastic, and it's effective on glass, paint, and trim.

Can I use dish soap to clean windows before tinting?

The early days of the industry, that's exactly what people used — Dawn dish soap and baby oil. The problem is Dawn is a degreaser, and it breaks down adhesive. So the same thing you're using to clean the glass is working against the film's adhesive bond. The industry figured that out over time and moved to purpose-built window tint cleaning supplies that clean without interfering with the install. We carry those products — it's worth using the right thing.

Does it matter if the car is brand new?

It does. Brand new vehicles still need to be cleaned the same way before tinting. There's manufacturing residue, handling, transport — the glass isn't install-ready just because the car is new. And customers who've removed their own old tint beforehand aren't helping either. Peeling the film off doesn't clean the adhesive. You still have to go through the full process.

How do I know when the glass is clean enough to start the install?

You can feel it. As the glass gets cleaner, it starts to drag a little against your touch — that's the friction of a clean surface. You'll also notice how water behaves when you spray it. The cleaner the glass, the more evenly the water moves. Once it's looking right in the light and feeling right to the touch, you're ready.

What are white scrub pads and why do window tint installers use them?

White scrub pads are non-abrasive cleaning pads that clean glass without scratching it. That's the whole reason installers use white specifically — green pads have more grit and can cause damage to the glass surface. White pads are safe, effective, and one of the highest-volume items we sell. They come in a couple of different varieties and they're a staple in every installer's kit.
